The Daily Money

Monday, December 6

Happy Monday(s), Daily Money readers. Jayme Deerwester with you again, doing my level best to keep the financial world from twisting your melon . Let's try to make some sense of today's news.

FOOD RECALL:  Check your refrigerator for fully-cooked ham and pepperoni products from Alexander & Hornung. The Michigan-based company is recalling nearly a quarter-ton of processed meat because of possible exposure to listeria  following a notice from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). So far, no illnesses have been reported.

BAD NEWS FOR PICKY EATERS: Chicken tenders  may be the next casualty of supply chain-generated shortages, according to a report by NBC News. Chicken and other forms of meat have already been subject to higher prices for the past year, leading the Biden administration to accuse the meat-processing industry of illegal price fixing. Meanwhile, manufacturers blame extreme weather, labor shortages and high demand as the reason for increased prices.

💡 INSIGHT OF THE DAY:  Nearing retirement? You could live off dividends by buying stock in fossil fuel company Magellan Midstream Partners, real estate investment trust Realty Income and wireless giant Verizon Communications. Not only do those companies' dividends match Fidelity's 4% to 5% recommended withdrawal rate, but they also offer the payout that growth investors need without reducing principal.

MOOD MUSIC:  Today's lyrical selection is dedicated to the Cincinnati Bearcats, the first non-Power 5 conference team to make the College Football Playoffs.  They'll face No. 1 seed Alabama on Dec. 31, which some sports pundits see as a jerk move by the committee. In their honor, I've chosen "The Gauntlet" by Dropkick Murphys :  "Do you think we're gonna make it?  I don't know unless we try. You could sit here scared to move, or we could take them by surprise."
