He's down for another round: President Joe Biden formally announced his bid for reelection. And despite a cease-fire, violence in Sudan is still erupting. |
👋 Hello! I'm Laura Davis, and this is Tuesday's news to know. | The worst-kept secret in Washington is out: Biden on Tuesday formally announced he's running for reelection in 2024, asking voters to give him more time to "finish this job." Biden, who would be 86 at the end of a second term, is betting his first-term legislative achievements and decades of experience will count for more than concerns about his age. He faces a smooth path to his party's nomination, with no serious Democratic challengers. But he's still set for a hard-fought struggle to retain the presidency in a bitterly divided nation. Here's what we know. |
👉 Meanwhile, accusing House Republicans of "hostage taking," the White House on Tuesday said Biden would veto a GOP plan that would raise the nation's debt limit but also cut spending – including some Democratic priorities. The threat shows how difficult it could be to resolve the standoff to avoid a calamitous default. More on the debt ceiling fight. | President Joe Biden speaks in Accokeek, Md., on April 19. Thousands desperately flee Sudan |
As explosions and gunfire echoed across Khartoum, the chaos engulfing the Sudanese capital became significantly more threatening Tuesday when one of the warring factions seized control of a national health lab that contains biological material. Here's the latest: |
• | Dr. Nima Saeed Abid, the World Health Organization's representative in Sudan, said one of the parties fighting for control of Sudan "kicked out all of the technicians" from a lab where measles, cholera and polio samples are held. | • | Thousands of Americans, Europeans and Africans were already fleeing Sudan as a new, three-day truce that came into effect late Monday did little to ease the violence overtaking the nation of 46 million, where about one-third of the population depends on humanitarian aid. | | A group of Kenyan evacuees from Sudan arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, on Monday.
