The Short List

Tue Apr 28 2026

Phaedra Trethan National Correspondent

@wordsbyphaedra

👋🏼 Hi there! I'm Phaedra Trethan, congratulating Jamie Ding on an amazing "Jeopardy!" run. 👏🏼

In Tuesday's news:

King Charles III addressed U.S. Congress during his four-day visit. 👑
Late night host Jimmy Kimmel is once again the target of Donald Trump's ire. But the president isn't the only one angry at the comedian. 🎙️
Shopping at this big-box store can be an exercise in consumer Darwinism. What's up with Costco shoppers, anyway? 🛒

But first: Florida wildlife officials have found a novel way to combat invasive Burmese pythons — by tracking their prey. 🐍

A royal address 🤴🏻

King Charles III is the first British monarch to address the U.S. Congress since his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, did so in 1991. On Tuesday, the King spoke to the legislature amid the strained relationship between the two nations over the war with Iran, NATO and tariffs. It's part of the royals' four-day visit to the U.S.

How do Americans feel about the British monarchy? Well...

Kimmel vs. Trumps 📺

Jimmy Kimmel is in trouble with the Trumps. Again. The late-night host made a joke about first lady Melania Trump days before the shooting at the White House Correspondents' dinner, saying she had "a glow like an expectant widow." The first lady fired back on social media, and a short time later, so did the president, who's calling on ABC and its parent company, Disney, to fire Kimmel. It's the second time Kimmel has run afoul of the administration as a result of one of his jokes.

Can political comedy survive in an atmosphere where comedians are called out by an administration? 🤨
Will ABC "take a stand" against Kimmel's comedic criticism as Trump urged?
Watch: Trump made his own joke about the longevity of his marriage to Melania.
Can the Trump administration punish Kimmel's employer? What First Amendment experts say. 💬

Real quick

Former FBI Director James Comey is under indictment. A prior indictment was dismissed. ⚖️
Miami Catholic Charities laid off 80 people after the Trump administration cut off its funding.
State and federal officials executed search warrants in an ongoing fraud investigation in Minnesota.
Gas prices hit a four-year high in the U.S. as peace negotiations with Iran have hit an impasse. ⛽️

Is Costco Thunderdome for shoppers? 🛒 😱

Everything is bigger at Costco, the popular warehouse-style stores where supersized deals and a dizzying array of stock from food to sheets, jewelry to tires, TVs to toilet paper can make shoppers feel overwhelmed, overjoyed or overstimulated. But that frenetic energy can have a downside: Crazed shoppers careening into each other's carts, chaos in the parking lot and people wandering aimlessly through aisles and getting in the way of fellow shoppers on a mission.

Summer means movies 🍿

From ancient Greece to a galaxy far, far away, the summer movie season has a blockbuster lineup of epic, sci-fi, superheroes and heroines to draw film fans to theaters. "The Mandalorian and Grogu," "The Odyssey," "Toy Story 5" and a live-action "Moana" are some of the big releases, but there's also a Nate Bargatze comedy, a historical D-Day drama, even a legal thriller of sorts with a certain cartoon coyote and a company whose products keep literally blowing up in his face.
