The Short List

👋🏼 Hi there! I'm Phaedra Trethan, old enough to remember when every party I attended was a " phone-free party." 📵

In Tuesday's news:

President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran.
We're learning more about the victims and the alleged shooter in a devastating mass shooting in Louisiana. 💔
Virginia voters head to the polls today to decide whether to OK a redistricting plan that would likely favor Democrats. 🗳️

But first: It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since we lost Prince. Here's a look at his life in photos. 💜 🎸 🎶

US-Iran ceasefire extended

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday afternoon that he would extend the ceasefire with Iran until the country had submitted a peace proposal and "discussions are concluded, one way or the other." The Iranian government is "seriously fractured," Trump said, adding that Pakistani officials, who've been facilitating talks, asked the U.S. to hold off on any further attacks. The announcement comes as the shaky ceasefire was set to expire and as the chances for talks between the two sides were growing increasingly dim.

'A singing family' tragically silenced

A relative of the eight Louisiana children who were killed this weekend called the family "a gospel, church-going family, a singing family." The children's voices, though, were allegedly silenced by their father, who some said was plagued by "dark thoughts." More details are emerging about the children and their father, as the Shreveport community continues to grapple with the tragedy.

Even for a nation numbed by frequent mass shootings, this one felt particularly baffling. Why would any parent ever kill their children?
Officials in Shreveport shared their timeline of how the shootings occurred.

Virginia is for... redistricting?

The nationwide redistricting battle launched by President Trump last year to change congressional maps ahead of this fall's midterms has come to Virginia. Voters in the commonwealth are heading to the polls Tuesday to decide on a referendum that would eliminate all but one GOP-leaning district, potentially changing Virginia's Congressional delegation from a 6-5 Democratic advantage to one that has as many as 10 Democrats.

The alcohol flowed, the music bumped and partygoers danced at an event in a hip Brooklyn neighborhood . The party was meant to be "a celebration of social life as it’s meant to be: free from the grip of greedy tech platforms" along with immersive art, rituals and DJ sets. So what was it like to attend a phone-free party? How do guests stay entertained and engaged without retreating to the safety of the solitary scroll?
