US House is about to get a fresh face
|
The winner of a special election in New Jersey on Thursday will head to Washington to represent the state's 11th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
|
Why is there a special election? A House seat was vacated by Democrat Mikie Sherrill, now the New Jersey governor, who resigned in November 2025 to run in the gubernatorial election.
|
Who's running? Joe Hathaway, who is viewed as a moderate Republican; Analilia Mejia, a progressive Democrat; and Alan Bond, an independent.
|
Why the race matters: Mejia is favored to win the heavily-Democratic district, but either way, the winner will bring a new face to the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson balances a thin GOP majority and intends to pursue a hardline second-term agenda for Trump. And this isn't the only Congressional replacement race of the year, and House resignations just opened up two more seats.

Congress' ethics earthquake: Just seven months before crucial midterm elections could shift the balance of power in Washington, the high-profile exits of Reps. Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales punctuated a new #MeToo moment on Capitol Hill. |
| • |
Cruise line to pay millions: Norwegian Cruise Line agreed to pay $2 million to a dozen U.S. states, following an investigation into its allegedly deceptive sales practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. |
| • |
Firing at the Fed? Amid threats to oust Jerome Powell, whether Trump would actually be able to fire the federal reserve chair is unclear. |
