The Short List

👋🏼 Hi there! I'm Phaedra Trethan. Spider-Man has always been my favorite superhero. Why? He's goofy, socially awkward and he works for a newspaper. Sounds familiar! 📸 🕷️ 📰

In Tuesday's news:

FBI officials say they foiled a planned attack on the UFC fight outside the White House.
Voters head to the polls for runoff elections in Georgia and Alabama, a special election in California and primaries in Washington, DC and Oklahoma. 🗳️
For many grandparents, retirement is less about relaxation and more about keeping up with the kids as they're tapped to help raise their kids' children.

But first: Pete Crow-Armstrong did the Chicago Cubbiest thing ever in a win over the Rockies on Monday. ⚾️ 😆

Attack thwarted at UFC fight

At least five people have been charged in connection with an alleged plot to target the weekend's Ultimate Fighting Championship event at the White House , with FBI officials saying they thwarted a plan that would have involved drones, explosive devices and multiple gunmen. The attack unraveled, authorities say, when the mother of a 19-year-old alleged co-conspirator went to police with concerns about her son's online activities. What court documents said.

Runoff elections and primary contests continue across the country, with elections in several states Tuesday. Turnout is key in primary and runoff elections, experts say. The races to watch include House and Senate primary runoffs in Alabama and Georgia (which also has a runoff for governor); a special election to replace Rep. Eric Swalwell, who resigned from Congress following sexual misconduct allegations; a mayoral primary in Washington, DC and primaries for House, Senate and governor in Oklahoma.

Real quick

The U.S. Department of Education says it's shifting civil rights and special services duties to the Department of Health and Human Services, a move some worry could disrupt options for millions of students. 🏫
The investigation continues into the crash of a B-52 bomber that killed 8 people.
Questions remain about the details of a deal between the United States and Iran, but Trump says Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon. 🚫
The price tag for Trump's ballroom at the White House has ballooned again, and now taxpayers will reportedly foot a big part of the bill. 💵

(Grand) parenting in retirement 👵🏼

Are American grandparents trading golf courses and cruise ships for the sidelines at soccer fields and after-school pickups?

A new AARP survey found that more grandparents than ever are providing daily or almost daily childcare for their kids' kids : On average, grands spend more than 500 hours each year, or the equivalent of 12.5 weeks of full-time work, providing care for their grandchildren. And it's not just the unpaid labor costing them: AARP also found grandparents spend an average of $2,654 annually on their grandkids, making for a total "grandparent economy" worth $904 billion.

Want to get away from it all? Like, really away from it all? These vacation spots lack cell service ‒ and that's a big selling point.

More travelers are leaving their devices behind and looking for destinations with little to no cell or internet service. "Deadzoning," they say, forces them to connect with their travel companions and with nature, or just to fully destress and literally unplug.
