The Short List

Mon Jun 15 2026

Phaedra Trethan National Correspondent

@wordsbyphaedra

👋🏼 Hi there! I'm Phaedra Trethan, digging out my old Rod Brind'Amour Flyers jersey and congratulating the coach on his team's Stanley Cup Finals win. 🏒 👏🏼

In Monday's news:

President Donald Trump announced over the weekend that a peace deal was reached between the United States and Iran, but many issues remain unresolved. 🕊️
Sports have never just been about sports. Two weekend events ‒ the World Cup and a UFC fight on the White House lawn ‒ brought that into stark relief. 🥊 ⚽️
Half of Gen Xers (but not this one!) are financially dependent on their parents, a new survey says. Meanwhile, younger people don't seem to share boomers' ideas about the American dream. 💵 🏡

But first: If aliens landed on Earth, how would we react? Turns out scientists have a plan. 👽

Peace between the United States and Iran? 🕊️

Trump announced Sunday that the United States and Iran have reached a framework deal to end the war that began Feb. 28 ‒ but some big questions remain, and it'll likely be several days before the final agreement will be signed. Trump said the deal would reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, but it's still unclear what will happen with Iran's nuclear program.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth denied concerns about shortages in U.S. munitions in the wake of the Iran war.
Watch: World leaders react to news of the peace agreement.
The war had a big impact on the global and U.S. economy. What will peace mean for your pocketbook?
Trump's approval rating hit a second-term low, NBC polling found.

The politics of sport(s) ⚽️ 🥊

Two big-ticket events over the weekend illustrated the intersection of politics and sports: the World Cup, which kicked off in cities from Los Angeles to New York (well, New Jersey) to Mexico City, and the UFC's mixed martial arts event on the White House lawn.

Will the UFC ever return to the White House? What UFC CEO Dana White said.
White also reacted to UFC fighter Josh Hokit's derogatory remark about former first lady Michelle Obama.
The UFC event was a bloody, on-brand Trumpian spectacle.
Columnist Nancy Armour writes that FIFA and the United States are using Iran's national soccer team as a political football.

Real quick

Twelve people were killed when a skydiving plane crashed in Missouri.
Sen. Mitch McConnell, the former Senate Majority Leader, is hospitalized. What we know. 🏥
The Supreme Court declined to take on a case challenging Trump's tariffs. ⚖️
Red, white and... green? The Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC might still not be ready for July 4 despite a multimillion-dollar renovation.

Generation(s) $ 🤑 🏚️

Work hard. Go to college or trade school. Get a good job. Buy a house, raise a family, retire with dignity. It's the American Dream ‒ or was, before college costs skyrocketed, housing became unaffordable and retirement seems out of reach for many.

Now younger Americans, especially Gen Z and millennials, say they're not sure their American dream is the same as their parents' and grandparents' was. For them, homeownership and a traditional nuclear family aren't the goals to which they aspire. Instead, they're searching for freedom, balance and their own vision of the good life, a new study finds.

Half of millennials and a third of Gen Xers still tap the Bank of Mom and Dad ‒ even in middle age and beyond. 🏧

Show your inner goblin 👹

When we met, husband and I worked together in a high-stress environment (a newspaper's sports department, with multiple deadlines each night), so he saw me at my craziest and crankiest before we ever started dating. Who knew that would become a dating trend all these years later? "Goblintimacy" is where you let your date see the weirdest, wildest, orneriest version of yourself first, baggage and all, so they know fully what they're in for. But be careful, experts say ‒ it can backfire.

A break from the news

Fresh off their first NBA Championship in 53 years, the New York Knicks are taking over "The Tonight Show." 🏀 📺
As someone who buys a lot of books, I have definitely noticed they're more expensive. Here's why. 📚 💸
Didn't have this on my 2026 bingo card: A Sesame Street icon is throwing some (very subtle) social media shade at another one. 🍪 🏀
