Obama Presidential Center opens on Juneteenth

The Obama Presidential Center opens to the public on Juneteenth, which commemorates  the events of June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, when the last enslaved Black people of the Confederacy were ordered to be freed after the arrival of Union troops.

The center includes  a towering museum, a Chicago Public Library branch, an athletic center, a civic center and more.

Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama (as well as their daughters) attended a star-studded grand opening ceremony yesterday, when the former president emphasized a message of "hope."
