The Short List

Thu Oct 8 2026

Phaedra Trethan |  National Correspondent

@wordsbyphaedra

👋🏼 Hello and happy almost-Friday! I'm Phaedra Trethan, and I've never met this Meijer character, but it's Wawa all the way for this Jersey girl. 🪿 🏪 🥪 ⛽️

In Thursday's news:

• Hurricane Isaias is set to make landfall along the Gulf Coast late tomorrow. 🌀
• Marches nationwide later today will call for an end to sexual violence and show support for Jane Doe, the former Cornell University student. ✊🏼
• Poor, rural areas across the nation are fighting back against data centers. One wealthy Virginia suburb is serving as a cautionary tale. 🚫 🏭 🤖

But first: I'm generally not one to sympathize with the Yankees (or their fans), but last night's loss was a tough one. Baseball... it'll break your heart in a thousand ways. ⚾️ 💔

Eyes on Isaias 🌀

Hurricane Isaias continues along the Gulf Coast today and the storm is expected to make landfall late Friday, bringing with it life-threatening storm surge, damaging winds and flooding rain. Isaias is the first hurricane in this year's Atlantic season, and the first to strike the U.S. since Milton in 2024.

The storm became a hurricane on Wednesday and will likely intensify before hitting land somewhere between Pascagoula, Mississippi, and Panama City Beach, Florida, on Friday evening. Communities along the coast are bracing for the storm, with many schools, colleges and universities canceling classes and Friday night football games.

A 'rapid response' to sexual violence ✊🏼

Survivors of sexual abuse, students and advocates are planning walkouts, rallies and vigils across 40 states later today in response to Cornell University’s handling of allegations that a student was gang-raped by fraternity members in 2024. More than 150 "#StopSexualViolence: From the Frat House to the White House National Day of Action" events are planned in cities, towns and campuses, organized by Women's March, Feminist, Feminist Generation and me too International, among others.

"This is a rapid response," Women’s March executive director Rachel O’Leary Carmona told USA TODAY, a "kind of a break-glass moment for our society to reckon with the spreading sexual violence and domestic violence and just gender-based violence."

'We've been screwed' 🤖

Loudon County, Virginia has two multimillion-dollar public recreation centers, new schools and lowered property taxes. So why do its residents feel like "We've been screwed," as one put it?

The wealthy Northern Virginia county, not far from Washington, DC, also has more than 230 data center buildings , more than anywhere else in the nation, and residents say the trade-off for tax revenue and amenities paid for by tech companies comes at a steep price: noise, pollution, lowered property values and a loss of their communities' natural beauty.

"Our residents have had enough," said Juli Briskman, a member of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors who has called for a moratorium on the computer warehouses. "It’s gone too far."

'Any cute guys there?' 📞

Forget dating apps. Young singles are picking up their phones and using them in a new/old way to meet potential mates: They're cold-calling restaurants, coffee shops and bars to ask, "Me and my friends were actually thinking of coming to happy hour in about an hour, and I just wanted to ask if there were, like, any cute guys there?"

"When Hinge isn’t working so you have to call the bars," one creator wrote over a video of her friend calling a bar in Vancouver that racked up 1.5 million views.

(Unsolicited advice from a long-married GenXer: Just go to the bar, restaurant or coffee shop with a friend or friends. You never know who else might show up, and if no one does, you can still have a good time.)
