Happy Thursday, readers. Emily Condon is back again today, and our team at USA TODAY is getting ready to cover major Senate race debates tonight in Michigan, Georgia and Maine.

Midterm countdown: 26 days until Election Day

A blue tsunami?

Less than a month before Election Day, Democrats are increasingly going on the offensive in historically red states as the battleground map expands into even redder parts of the country: Alaska, Kansas, Nebraska, and even South Carolina.

"This election has all the signs of a blue tsunami coming, and there's not really anything that the Republican Party can do to stop it," a political scientist told USA TODAY.

President Donald Trump campaigned in Nebraska on Monday, warning that MAGA agendas are at risk and telling the crowd that "they're all saying we're in trouble in the midterms." Still, Trump has been calling polls reporting Democratic leads "fake" and a ploy to suppress Republican voter turnout.

A politics roundup:

• A new poll says Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman is popular with Republicans, while only 13% of Democrats have a favorable opinion of him.
• Trump to give controversial baseball pitching legend Roger Clemens the presidential Medal of Freedom.
• A flight attendants union is raising safety concerns about Trump’s proposed arch near Reagan National Airport.
• The USS Abraham Lincoln returns home after a historic deployment. Follow today's live updates.

Michelle Obama's snub over Trumps' renovations

"Regardless of party, our families understood that winning an election didn't grant us the deed to a few acres of prime real estate to remake in our own image," Michelle Obama wrote in an essay praising Jacqueline Kennedy's historic renovations to the White House.

"We recognized that we were just temporary stewards of a home that belonged to the nation, even as we also recognized that like any 200-year-old house, updates were often sorely needed − especially considering the demands of a modern presidency."

Obama did not name President Donald Trump nor first lady Melania Trump, but the rebuke was clear, as the Trumps have made extensive changes to the White House in his second term.

Senate candidates taking the debate stage this week

Midterm debates are officially in season, as this week marked four weeks until Election Day. On Tuesday evening in Iowa , Republican U.S. Rep Ashley Hinson and Democrat Josh Turek squared off on immigration and the Iran war in their Senate race.

In Michigan tonight , Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed seeks to unify Democrats and prove the electability of progressive Democrats in battlegrounds. He'll debate Trump-backed Republican Rep. Mike Rogers. On the Maine debate stage, incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins will take on Democrat Troy Jackson as recent polls report mixed results, with Collins edging, Jackson leading and both candidates in a deadlock.

Also tonight: In Georgia, Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff and Republican Rep. Mike Collins will face off, with polling consistently showing Ossoff with a sizeable lead.

Trump also called for a debate in the Texas Senate race between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico. Trump said the Democratic state representative "should immediately report to a debate stage against Ken Paxton, who is ready, willing, and able."
