Violent crime was on the decline last year. New evidence was unveiled in the investigation into the latest apparent assassination attempt against Donald Trump. And a major hurricane could lash Florida this week.

👋Hey, Monday! Laura Davis here. Ready for the news? It's ready for you.

But first: A history lesson from columnist Mike Freeman. 📝 You may not know about the life of Mercury Morris. But you should.

Violent crime on the decline

For the second year in a row, violent crime in the United States declined in 2023, including instances of murder, rape and assault, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates released Monday.

By the numbers: Overall violent crime declined 3% compared to the prior year, the statistics show. Murder decreased by more than 11%, while rape fell roughly 9%. The decreases follow a sharp uptick in crime during the COVID-19 pandemic when the murder rate spiked in its largest single-year increase on record. 🔎 We break down the report.

'This was an assassination attempt'

The man arrested in connection with an alleged assassination plot against Donald Trump earlier this month wrote a letter saying he intended to kill the former president, according to prosecutors.

Details released: Months before the incident at Trump's Florida golf course, Ryan Routh allegedly left a metal box with a person who was not identified in court filings. After hearing about the suspect's arrest, the person opened the box and found a handwritten letter that began, "This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump," along with ammunition, a metal pipe, building materials, four phones and several more letters, prosecutors said. More details from the filing.

A brewing storm in the Caribbean is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane over the next few days and make landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast as early as Thursday − possibly as a Category 3 system named Helene.

Hunker down, Florida: While there remains uncertainty in both the track and intensity, forecasters say Florida isn't getting out of this one. The storm could make landfall as a major hurricane, carrying a serious risk of surge, wind and rain on Thursday or Friday. 👉 See the latest updates.

Hundreds killed in Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon

Explosions boomed across Lebanon on Monday as the Israeli military carried out its most widespread attacks on the country in almost a year, killing more than 270 people and wounding more than a thousand, according to Lebanon's health ministry. Back-and-forth strikes between Israel and Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah escalated dramatically in the past week after pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah exploded, killing 37 and injuring more than 2,700, in an Israeli-linked attack. The bombings fueled fears of an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah, which has fired increasingly on Israel over the ongoing war in Gaza. 👉 What we know now.

As tensions spike, US sends more troops to Middle East.
