The U.S. is in the middle of putting five men to death in a six-day period. Freddie Owens was executed in South Carolina Friday amid doubts over his guilt. On Tuesday, Marcellus Williams was executed in Missouri even though the prosecutors and the victim's family wanted his life spared amid new evidence. And Texas executed Travis James Mullis in the murder of his 3-month-old son in 2008. |
The U.S. is a rarity among developed nations when it comes to the ultimate punishment, with more than 1,590 executions in the past five decades. |
Helene forecast to be of the 'most aggressive' in hurricane history |
The forecast for Helene is set to transition from a potential tropical cyclone to a Category 3 hurricane appears to be the fastest progression ever predicted for a depression by the National Hurricane Center. Helene is forecast to make landfall along or near Florida's Big Bend on Thursday evening with widespread wind, rain and storm surge impacts throughout the Southeast, but its exact track and timing could still shift. Ohio chemical leak prompts evacuations |
The first results from air monitoring from a dangerous chemical leak at a railyard near Cincinnati will be known by early Wednesday. The data will determine if the radius of evacuation and a shelter-in-place order should be changed from its current three-quarters of a mile from a railcar leaking styrene in Whitewater Township near Cleves, just west of Cincinnati. The leak forced nearby schools and residents to leave their homes Tuesday as officials warned of a possible threat of an explosion. Read more |
Israel kills Hezbollah commander in Beirut |
An Israeli airstrike on Beirut killed a senior Hezbollah commander on Tuesday as cross-border rocket attacks by both sides increased fears of a full-fledged war in the Middle East. Israel's military said the airstrike on the Lebanese capital killed Ibrahim Qubaisi, who it said was the commander of Hezbollah's missile and rocket force. Lebanon reported 569 people had been killed and 1,835 wounded since Israel launched heavy strikes on Monday morning, including 50 children. Read more |
Whooping cough cases are on the rise |
When it comes to seasonal illnesses, few are as dreaded − or as preventable − as whooping cough. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that vaccinations that protect against whooping cough have waned and that rates of the illness are on the rise. The disease is preventable by a series of vaccines that many people receive as an infant called DTaP − which stands for Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis. Read more |
