Deadly tornado leaves 'heartbreaking' destruction in Missouri

A feverish search for survivors was underway Wednesday in southeastern Missouri after a tornado slammed into Glen Allen and the neighboring community of Grassy, leaving at least five people dead, authorities said. "The damage is pretty widespread. It's just heartbreaking to see it," Sgt. Clark Parrott of the Missouri Highway Patrol said. And there's even more bad weather in the forecast: More than 45 million Americans were under some form of tornado, severe thunderstorm, or wind watches and advisories Wednesday. Keep reading.

A political earthquake

Tuesday's arraignment of Donald Trump was unprecedented, but that distinction isn't likely to stand. His 34-count felony indictment marked the first time a former president had been charged with a crime. It is all but guaranteed not to be the last – perhaps not even the last for Trump. Now, the debate begins: Did Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg prove that no person is above the law? Or will this open the floodgates for score-settling with other presidents? Here's what you should know.

Chicago elects a new mayor; Liberals win key Wisconsin court election

Voters in Chicago chose former teacher Brandon Johnson as mayor of the nation's third-largest city, capping a tight runoff that marked a momentous win for progressive groups. Johnson, beat out Paul Vallas, a former city budget director backed by the city's police union. Both candidates have deep roots in the Democratic Party but presented opposing views on issues like crime, taxes, schools and policing. Read more about Johnson.

Another notable election: In Wisconsin, voters carried Democratic-backed Judge Janet Protasiewicz to victory in a nationally watched race for a state Supreme Court seat. Her win earns liberals control of a court that has leaned conservative for 15 years and is poised to make major decisions about abortion rights and the future of elections in the state. Learn why the race was so consequential.

👉 Opinion from Rex Huppke: While Trump was being arraigned, Americans were making it clear they aren't buying what Republicans are selling.

What does long COVID do to kids?

In the last year, doctors at post-COVID-19 clinics have made major strides in the pediatric field. Researchers investigating the long-term effects of COVID-19 in children learned that an estimated 5% to 10% of children and teens develop a wide range of ongoing health problems called post-COVID conditions, or long COVID, said Dr. Roberta DeBiasi, chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Children's National Hospital in Washington. "Many of these kids were completely healthy kids prior to the diagnosis and it can completely disrupt their life and their ability to participate in sports and school," she said. Here's a look at the latest information about long COVID and kids.
