What's going on at the Fed? |
The Senate narrowly voted in favor of President Donald Trump's pick to join the Federal Reserve board of governors, just in time for its September rate decision meeting beginning Tuesday. |
Why this matters: Trump is now one step closer to majority on the seven-person Fed board, which sets the nation's economic policy. |
| • | There are concerns over the Fed's independence. The Senate confirmed the rushed appointment of Stephen Miran, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, in a 48-47 vote in favor. Miran's nomination spurred questions from lawmakers concerned he would bow to Trump's demands for more aggressive rate cuts. | | • | But Trump had one Fed loss, too: An appeals court Monday said Lisa Cook can remain for now on the Federal Reserve board as she fights Trump's unprecedented attempt to remove her from the central bank. Cook argues Trump's allegations are a pretext to fire her for her monetary policy stance. | | • | Why is the Fed expected to cut rates now? While inflation remains above the Fed's 2% target, when the labor market is weak, cutting interest rates can make borrowing costs cheaper for businesses and consumers. | | Stephen Miran, President Donald Trump's nominee to the Federal Reserve Board, attends a Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee nomination hearing on Capitol Hill on Sept. 4, 2025. A deal may be in the works: On Monday, Trump posted on Truth Social saying that "a deal was also reached on a 'certain' company that young people in our Country very much wanted to save." At a trade meeting between U.S. and China officials in Madrid, Spain, officials said a framework deal to move the app to U.S. ownership had been reached, per Reuters. As details of the deal remain under wraps, Trump also said he will be speaking to Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday. |

FBI head faces criticism from all sides |
FBI director Kash Patel will testify to Congress on Tuesday and Wednesday about the bureau's actions following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah university. Among the criticisms, people are upset that Patel kept a dinner reservation at a hard-to-get-into New York restaurant on the night of Kirk's killing, that he shared on social media unverified information about a subject's arrest, that he took too long to release a photo of the suspect, that he failed to ensure there was better security at the crime scene in Utah and that he made improper public statements about the case. And now, Patel is under scrutiny for what he's saying publicly about the investigation. |
| • | Prosecutors will unveil formal charges against the suspect in Kirk's killing this week, providing their most detailed accounting yet of what happened. | | • | What should we make of Kirk tributes at sports events? | | • | JD Vance choked up on podcast about Kirk. | |
What to know about a strike against alleged Venezuelan drug traffickers |
President Trump said the U.S. military conducted a second strike on what he described as "violent drug trafficking cartels" from Venezuela, killing three people in international waters in an ongoing campaign that has raised bipartisan concerns about due process. Republican and Democratic lawmakers questioned the tactics after an earlier strike on a suspected drug boat. |
| • | "What a despicable and thoughtless sentiment it is to glorify killing someone without a trial," U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, wrote online after Vice President JD Vance touted the earlier strike. | |
American farmers warn this year feels especially dire |
'I'm especially concerned for those who may not have the equity to fall back on to ride out another unprofitable year. We don't want to lose another generation of farmers like we did in the '80s.' |
~ Brian Duncan, an Illinois farmer and president of the Illinois Farm Bureau. Duncan and other farmers told USA TODAY this year is hitting their industry especially hard. Farmers' struggles could have ripple effects on the broader economy as they cut back on spending. |
Photo of the day: Welcome at Windsor? |
Trump arrives in Britain on Tuesday for an unprecedented second state visit. It starts the next day, when he will be treated to the customary display of royal pageantry at Windsor Castle, including a carriage tour and a lavish banquet. The visit comes amid revelations of a close relationship between Britain's former ambassador to the U.S., Peter Mandelson, and the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. | A large banner depicting U.S. President Donald Trump alongside disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein displayed near the Windsor Castle, protesting Trump's state visit to the country, in Windsor, Britain, September 15, 2025.
