The Federal Reserve cuts rates for the first time since last year. A family of a Black student whose body was found hanging from a tree wants more transparency in the death investigation. Also: A chapter of "The Summer I Turned Pretty" comes to an end.

👋 Hi! Rebecca Morin here. Oops, I got my days mixed up yesterday (but maybe time is just a construct. 😉) Now, here's Wednesday's news for you!

But first: A ghost ship. 🚢 Citizen scientists discovered a ghost ship that had eluded historians and shipwreck hunters for decades at the bottom of Lake Michigan.

A slight rate cut

After nine months of staying on the sidelines, the Federal Reserve on Wednesday announced a quarter-percentage-point cut to a range of 4% to 4.25%. It's the first rate cut since late 2024, and officials signaled the possibility of two more rate cuts this year. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is projecting inflation to be higher than previously expected by the end of next year, and says the economy is unlikely to return to the Fed's 2% target until 2028.

What do rate cuts mean? Typically, the Fed hikes rates or keeps them steady to tame inflation. The central bank lowers rates to juice the economy. While the Fed previously held back on rate cuts due to inflation concerns, a series of disappointing jobs reports showed a weakening labor market. 👉 Follow the latest on the rate cuts.

What happened at a Mississippi university?

The family of Demartravion "Trey" Reed, whose body was found hanging from a tree on a university campus in the Mississippi Delta on Tuesday, called for transparency in the death investigation. During a news conference, attorney Vanessa J. Jones said her firm is representing Reed's family and is initiating its own investigation into his death, beginning with an independent autopsy.

What happened? Reed, 21, was found hanging from a tree in the middle of Delta State University's campus at around 7:05 a.m. local time on Monday, according to university police. While police said there was no evidence of foul play and ruled the death a suicide, classes and events scheduled for the school's centennial celebrations were canceled for the day. 👉 What to know about the investigation.

Anger and skepticism on social media: Following the incident, rumors circulated online questioning the circumstances surrounding Reed's death. The rumors alleged that Reed had two broken legs and other injuries that would have prevented him from hanging himself. Bolivar County Coroner Randolph Seals Jr. disputed the claims. 👉 See the coroner's statement.

President or king?

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is warning that civic education needs to improve so Americans understand the difference between presidents and kings. During a New York Law School event celebrating Constitution and Citizenship Day on Tuesday, she said that it's important in a democracy for Americans to be informed on "what people can or should not do." While she didn't mention President Donald Trump by name, her comments come at a time when the president is pushing the boundaries of presidential power. That has prompted protestors to hold "No Kings" demonstrations across the country. 👉 How Trump's actions have alarmed critics.
