Hello, readers! Happy Wednesday, otherwise known as last-minute Thanksgiving prep day. God speed to anyone visiting a grocery store today. OnPolitics will be back next week after the holiday. Here's what to know to get you through until then. |
ICE detains Trump official family member |
The mother of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt's nephew was detained by federal immigration officials in Massachusetts earlier this month. |
Bruna Caroline Ferreira, who arrived from Brazil as a young child in 1998 with her parents, was detained as she was on her way to pick up her son from school on Nov. 12, according to her lawyer. She is accused by the Department of Homeland Security of overstaying her tourist visa. |
Ferreira, 33, shares an 11-year-old son with Leavitt's older brother, Michael, and the two share joint custody of the child, Ferreira's attorney told USA TODAY. The couple was engaged about 12 years ago and eventually broke up. |
Leavitt did not provide comments to USA TODAY but a source familiar with the dynamics between the two women said they haven't spoken to each other in years. | Press secretary Karoline Leavitt speaks to reporters outside the White House on Nov. 24, 2025. Heather Diehl, Getty Images |
Vaccine skeptic nabs top CDC role |
A health official who has opposed widespread vaccination for diseases including COVID-19 and the flu, and promoted discredited remedies for the coronavirus, is reportedly the new principal deputy director of the CDC. |
Louisiana Surgeon General Ralph has been confirmed by The Department of Health and Human Services, according to multiple media reports. |
Abraham previously told The Shreveport Times, part of the USA TODAY Network, that he does not recommend vaccination for COVID-19, which he believes is dangerous, a stance mirroring HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s view. He said he prefers natural immunity but will write a prescription for a COVID-19 vaccine − if a patient insists. |
Charges dropped in Trump election interference case |
A judge dismissed the Georgia state criminal election fraud case against President Donald Trump and his co-defendants today. |
The decision grants a prosecutor's request to throw out the case, who said he believes declining to prosecute the case any further would best "serve the interests of justice and promote judicial finality" in the case. |
The decision comes after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, whose office brought charges against Trump and several other co-defendants, was disqualified from the case as a result of a relationship she had with another prosecutor. |
