Happy Friday!🙋🏼‍♀️ I'm Nicole Fallert. Choose the names of turkeys to get a presidential pardon.

Close out the week with Friday's news:

A White House meeting may give Zohran Mamdani the opportunity to adjust the embattled stance cities face with the Trump administration.
Why did unemployment rise if jobs were added?
Welcome to the era of Ozempic Thanksgiving.

An Oval Office trap, or space for common ground?

The stakes couldn't be higher for a Friday White House meeting between President Donald Trump and New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

Similar, but different: Trump, a 79-year-old Republican, and Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, are diametrically opposed in style and substance. However, both are New Yorkers with ardent supporters — who ran winning campaigns that addressed affordability.

Trump decries Dems as seditionists

President Donald Trump accused six Democratic Congress members of "seditious behavior, punishable by death" after the lawmakers made a video urging servicemembers to resist illegal orders.

Is that possible? Legal experts told USA TODAY that the president's accusations would likely fall apart in court. And, according to legal statute, sedition is punishable by a fine and up to 20 years in prison, not death. That hasn't stopped a number of Trump's supporters to call for the death penalty.

Why the unemployment rate rose

A delayed jobs report showed U.S. employers added 119,000 jobs in September, surpassing expectations, but the unemployment rate inched up from 4.3% in August to 4.4% in September — the highest in nearly four years. The report, originally due out Oct. 3, reflects what was happening before the shutdown began. The labor market may have changed since the data was collected.

'Very treatable' sepsis is often a death sentence for inmates

Arrests for infractions as minor as trespassing or a missed probation meeting turn into death sentences when correctional facilities delay or deny medical care that inmates need. Grieving families then sue for millions, often leaving taxpayers to foot the bill. A USA TODAY investigation found these preventable deaths happen hundreds of times each year in jails and prisons scattered from coast to coast. Without fail, everyone USA TODAY spoke with who lost someone to sepsis in correctional facilities echoed a sense of disbelief.

Say goodbye to Thanksgiving gravy?

Filling a plate and not eating it all; Wearing a new style; Refusing seconds: As GLP-1s go mainstream, it's more likely than not someone at your Thanksgiving table will look or eat differently this year. And it can be easy for us to feel upset or offended if someone is not eating the day's special dishes. Here's how to recreate savory moments in the Ozempic era.

Photo of the day: Honoring a star

Friends, family and colleagues of the late "Black Panther" actor, Chadwick Boseman, gathered on Thursday to honor him as he received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Boseman died on Aug. 29, 2020, at the age of 43 after a private four-year battle with colon cancer. It was an emotional moment.
