Unease gripped Lebanon after two days of deadly explosions. Tennessee's highest mountain gets a name change. And a miniature moon will (temporarily) orbit Earth. |
👋Hey, there! Laura Davis here. It's Thursday, which means it's time for Thursday's news. | Tension rippled across Lebanon on Thursday, after Israel's defense minister vowed to begin a "new phase" in its war with Hamas in Gaza, and after pagers and walkie-talkies belonging to Hezbollah fighters exploded in the Middle Eastern country across two days, killing at least 37 people and injuring thousands. Lebanon's government and Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group that uses the nation as a base for its militants, both blamed Israel for the attacks on wireless electronic devices. |
What's going on? Israel and Hezbollah have long been enemies, but fighting between the two has been stoked by the Israel-Hamas war. 👉 Follow our coverage. | Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepts rockets launched from Lebanon towards Israel on Sept. 18, 2024. Ayal Margolin, REUTERS |
You get a free COVID test! And you get one too! |
At the end of September, American households will be able to order free COVID-19 tests that will detect current variants and be usable until the end of the year, officials said. |
What to know: Since the pandemic, COVID-19 has joined the flu and RSV, becoming a common respiratory virus that peaks in the year's colder months. Each household can get up to four free at-home tests (including shipping!) by ordering at COVIDtest.gov. 👉 More about the free tests. |
Cherokee name in, Confederate name out |
The highest peak in the sprawling Great Smoky Mountains National Park is dropping the name of a Confederate general in favor of its Cherokee name, "Kuwohi." This week, the U.S. Board of Geographic Names approved a formal request by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians after an effort started by band members Mary Crowe and Lavita Hill in 2022, who called the 6,643-foot peak "spiritual and sacred." |
Name's history: The Cherokee first settled the mountain thousands of years ago, and the name they gave it translates to "the mulberry place." In 1859, the mountain was named Clingmans Dome after Thomas Clingman, a senator from North Carolina who would soon serve as a Confederate general during the Civil War. Brianna Paciorka/News Sentinel, Brianna Paciorka/News Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK | The Earth will soon have a second mini-moon, although it will be a brief visit. The small asteroid was discovered on Aug. 7 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), a NASA-funded program. Now named asteroid 2024 PT5, it will be captured in Earth's gravitational pull from Sept. 29 to Nov. 25. After that, it will escape Earth's orbit and be pulled toward the sun before continuing its travels around our solar system. 🌕 Explaining the mini-moon. | During its 56-day orbit, Asteroid 2024 PT5 will travel in a horseshoe-shaped trajectory before leaving Earth's gravity.
