Heads up, leaf peepers! Fall foliage is coming soon. A former aide to New York's governor is in hot water over suspected ties to the Chinese government. And hurricane forecasters are keeping a close watch on the tropics. |
πHey, Tuesday! Laura Davis here. Ready to get caught up on the news? Let's go. |
It's almost the leaf-peepin' season |
Kids are heading back to school, the blistering summer days will soon come to an end, and surely as the sun rises each day the leaves will be changing colors to show off the vibrant hues of fall. |
About the timing: According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, leaves can change their color from as early as mid-September all the way through early November. "Typically, the second and third week of October are the peak times, but it shifts depending on where you live and your local weather conditions," the almanac says. ππ Seeing is be-leaf-ing: See our fall foliage map. | Where will autumn's colors appear first? Protests raise pressure on Netanyahu | As Hamas warned that attempts to rescue hostages could result in more of them being killed, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets in recent days for demonstrations and strikes aimed at pressuring their government to negotiate freedom for the captives. Protests continued Tuesday, but Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu pushed back on criticism in his first public address since Israel's military recovered the bodies of six hostages over the weekend, saying, "No one will preach to me." π See the latest updates on the conflict. | People gather to protest against the government and to show support for the hostages who were kidnapped during the deadly October 7 attack amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas in Tel Aviv, Israel on Tuesday. Former aide to NY governor charged as Chinese agent | A former aide to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul received millions of dollars in business and gifts – including Nanjing-style salted ducks and money that went toward a Ferrari sports car – as she acted as an undisclosed agent of the Chinese government, federal prosecutors say. Linda Sun, 41, Hochul's former deputy chief of staff, was arrested Tuesday and charged along with her husband in the scheme that prosecutors say involved her state government service "to further the interests of the Chinese government." π What we know so far. |
A trio of tropical threats |
Will they or won't they? The National Hurricane Center is keeping a keen eye on three disturbances in the Atlantic Ocean that could become tropical depressions this week. |
Weather watch: The first two of the "tropical waves" − a meteorological term for an area of low pressure − have a 40% chance of developing over the next seven days, and the third has a 10% chance, the hurricane center said. π See the full forecast. | The National Hurricane Center is currently tracking three tropical waves in the Atlantic, two of which could develop into tropical depressions by the end of the week.
