Nancy Pelosi announces retirement after groundbreaking career

Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Nov. 6 that she won't run for another term, the end of a groundbreaking career that made her the most powerful woman in the nation's history.

"I will not be seeking reelection to Congress," she said in a six-minute video addressed to her constituents that began, "Dear San Francisco."

At 85, the congresswoman, a liberal stalwart, was facing growing grumbles that after 20 terms it was time for her to step aside.
State Rep. Scott Wiener already had announced he would seek the Democratic nomination next year, and other contenders are sure to follow for the solidly Democratic seat.
During two stints as the highest-ranking member of Congress, Pelosi led two impeachments of President Donald Trump and engineered efforts to convince President Joe Biden to drop his bid for a second term.

Airports start reducing flights amid shutdown

Nearly 40 days into the longest government shutdown in history, 40 major U.S. airports are reducing their flights by 10% to account for the pressure placed on air traffic controllers who are not being paid. Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Bryan Bedford told CEOs of major airlines the cuts would begin at 4% on Friday, Nov. 7, rise to 5% on Nov. 8 and 6% on Nov. 9 before hitting 10% next week. "It's going to lead to more cancellations, but we are going to work with the airlines to do this in a systematic way," Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said at a Nov. 5 news conference.

Judge orders Trump admin to fully fund SNAP for November

A federal judge in Rhode Island ordered the Trump administration to fully cover federal food assistance for 42 million Americans in November by Friday. The Nov. 6 order comes days after the Trump administration said it would provide only partial food stamp benefits for November. The administration quickly moved to appeal the order, making it unclear whether the SNAP benefits would be paid in full by Friday.

Search for answers continues following UPS plane crash

As the community in Louisville, Kentucky, mourns those killed in a fiery United Parcel Service cargo plane crash, authorities warned that answers for family members may still be a way off. At least 13 people, including three crew members, were killed and multiple others were injured in the Nov. 4 crash, officials said. The death toll could continue to grow as a slow search for a cause begins. The 13th victim died on Nov. 6 at an area hospital, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said at a vigil. Earlier in the day, the mayor said nine people were still unaccounted for.
