Hello, readers! Kathryn Palmer here, landing in your inbox bit earlier today to bring you a run-down of last night's elections. Results came in rather quickly in the closely watched races, making it a far less dramatic evening than the last election. Here are the top takeaways from this year's Election Day. |
Democrats pull off sweeping wins in NYC, NJ, VA and CA |
Democratic nominees in Tuesday's races crushed their Republican opponents in all the big-ticket races, ushering in a surge of energy for a party that suffered crushing losses one year ago. |
Zohran Mamdani pulled off a triumphant win in the New York City mayoral race. Democrats also cruised to victory in gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey with Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill. Voters also overwhelmingly approved a referendum in California to redraw congressional lines in a direct challenge to GOP map redrawing that started in Texas. |
The victories offer a glimpse into the party's growing momentum ahead of next year's consequential midterm elections and act as a political gage of how Americans in several states are feeling about the GOP and President Donald Trump. | Democratic candidate for New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani reacts after winning the 2025 New York City Mayoral race on election night. New York City elects Zohran Mamdani as its next mayor |
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist who shot to stardom in Democratic politics, has won the race for mayor of New York City. |
It's a generational shakeup for the party and a dramatic trajectory for Mamdani, a state lawmaker who was polling at 1% when he launched his upstart campaign focused on housing and cost of living. |
California passes Prop 50 to redistrict in favor of Democrats |
Prop 50 is a constitutional amendment pushed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom that would allow the nation's most populous state to temporarily stop using a nonpartisan commission to draw congressional district boundaries. Instead, California will use lines drawn by Democratic state lawmakers to increase the seats they hold in Congress. |
The measure was launched in direct response to Texas GOP lawmakers' redistricting earlier this year, and essentially negate the five new Republican-leaning congressional districts the new maps created. |
