Hello readers! Kathryn Palmer here, and happy Monday. Sending positive thoughts to anyone with air travel plans this week. I would send patience, but, admittedly, I don't have much of that to begin with! Let's get into today's news. |
ICE deploys to airports. Is National Guard next? | If you're heading to a handful of major U.S. airports today, you can expect long lines, overpriced food and... uniformed ICE agents. After Trump announced his intention to send the federal immigration enforcement agency to "help" TSA agents over the weekend, they've been spotted at Newark Liberty International Airport, New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport, and are expected to deploy to at least nine others. President Donald Trump told reporters today he would deploy National Guard troops, too, if ICE agents weren't enough help to reduce security lines at airports, amid a partial government shutdown that has left the TSA strained and understaffed. However, it's unclear how much these federal agents will be able to help. Border czar Tom Homan said that ICE agents won't be manning X-ray machines or telling passengers where to put their bags; rather, they are meant to help with other tasks to free up TSA agents for security screenings. | ICE agents walk through a long line of travelers at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on March 23, 2026 in Atlanta. Trump says Iran 'badly' wants a deal. Iran denies negotiations. | Trump said today the United States has engaged in "very strong talks" with Iran and reached "major points of agreement" that could end the war, which Iranian officials have firmly denied. While the president claimed Iran wants to make a deal, he also added that if negotiations fall apart, the United States will "keep bombing our little hearts out." Iran's speaker of parliament, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, denied negotiations had taken place between the two countries. Over the weekend, Trump threatened to carry out strikes on Iranian power plants if Iran failed to open the Strait of Hormuz today, but then extended his ultimatum deadline another five days, citing ongoing negotiations. Follow along with live updates on the war, now in its fourth week. |
Will Trump's face appear on a coin? |
Two similar, but very different, coins that may feature images of the president are closer to becoming reality. One would be a huge, gold collector's item. The other would be a controversial and temporary addition to circulating currency in the form of a $1 coin meant to celebrate the nation's 250th birthday. The coins, if produced, would be the latest push by Trump and his allies to feature his name and likeness on items and buildings of significance, from national park passes and banners to the renamed Trump-Kennedy Center for the Arts. The $1 coin's design would feature a side profile image of Trump, also with the word "LIBERTY" and the dates 1776-2026. | | Sen. Critics are now using it in conjunction with Iran power plants, Straight of Hormuz.
