The Short List

Thu Mar 26 2026

@wordsbyphaedra

👋🏼 Hi there! I'm Phaedra Trethan, looking forward to watching my beloved Phillies open their 2026 season. World Series or bust, boys! ⚾️

In Thursday's news:

More than 3,100 "No Kings" protests against the Trump administration are planned across the U.S. this weekend. 🚫 👑
The International Olympic Committee banned female transgender athletes from competing in the games.
President Donald Trump said Iran let several ships through the Strait of Hormuz during his first Cabinet meeting since the war began. 🚢

But first: A sure sign of spring: The cherry trees are blossoming in Washington, DC. 🌸 🍒 😍

'People are tired of what's happening'

Thousands of marches are planned across the U.S. this Saturday, with "No Kings" protests expected to draw millions of people. Their reasons vary though. Some object to immigration raids and detentions. Some oppose the war in Iran. Some are spurred by what they see as creeping authoritarianism.

The third iteration of the protests may be the biggest, organizers say . One Kansas City leader told USA TODAY, "People are tired of what's happening. It's really energizing to have thousands of people that have the same mindset; they want to save democracy."

A White House spokesperson rejected the protests as "Trump Derangement Therapy sessions," adding that the only people who care "are the reporters who are paid to cover them."

Trump continued to attack the judiciary, saying Supreme Court justices who ruled against his policies are "bad for the country."
Could Trump face impeachment? What could happen after the midterms?

IOC: No transgender women can compete

There will be no transgender women in the Olympics, the International Olympic Committee said Thursday, starting with the Los Angeles Summer Games in 2028. The move is a reversal of the IOC's 2004 decision to allow transgender women to compete.

Just one openly transgender woman has competed at the Olympics: In 2021, a weightlifter from New Zealand failed to make it past the opening round of competition in Tokyo.

Real quick

A pair of siblings are accused of placing an improvised explosive device at Florida military base.
Trump said ICE "makes a big difference" at airports. Others aren't so sure.
A Venezuelan man who was sent to a notorious El Salvador prison is suing the Trump administration.
Parents who lost their children to suicide are reacting to a landmark case against Meta and Google.

'Big boats of oil' from Iran?

Iranian officials allowed several ships to pass through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, Trump said Thursday, as a show of good faith during negotiations with the U.S. Speaking at his first Cabinet meeting since the war started, Trump said Iranians allowed a total of 10 "big boats of oil" through the strait, a move the president said proved "we're dealing with the right people." The latest developments.

Global Oil
