The Short List

Tue Mar 3 2026

Phaedra Trethan National Correspondent

👋🏼 Hi there! I'm Phaedra Trethan, thinking of my grandma and all the incredible "grandma" figures out there. 🩷 👵🏼

In Tuesday's news:

Oil prices soared and stock markets sank amid the war in Iran. 🛢️ 📈 💸 📉
Texas, North Carolina and Arkansas all hold primaries that will determine who's running in November's midterms. 🗳️
A Georgia father has been found guilty of murder in connection with a 2024 school shooting.

But first: Ever wonder who determines the worth of a historic document — or whether it belongs in private or public hands? I did. Here's what I learned. 📜 ✍🏼 🤔

Iran fallout: Oil prices soar, stocks sink

Oil prices surged to their highest levels since 2024 and stocks cratered as the war with Iran escalates. The Trump administration seems poised for a protracted conflict, with President Donald Trump saying Tuesday the United States is capable of fighting Iran "forever" without running out of weapons. What we know .

Primaries color midterm outlook 🗳️

Election season is here: Voting in the first primaries of the 2026 midterm races is underway . Voters in Arkansas, North Carolina and Texas are choosing who'll run in congressional races. So what's at stake? Control of Congress, for starters. Tuesday's primaries are expected to offer clues about other races to come: voter turnout, redistricting and intraparty divisions.

Dad guilty in school shooting case

Colin Gray, whose son Colt is accused of fatally shooting two classmates and two teachers at his Georgia high school, was found guilty of murder, manslaughter and other charges. A jury found the elder Gray gave his son the gun allegedly used in the 2024 shooting at Apalachee High School, despite indications his son was struggling with mental health issues. What the verdict could mean in other school shooting cases.

Forced to choose motherhood over teaching 🤰🏻

Only 15 states and Washington, DC require districts to offer paid parental leave for educators, according to the National Council on Teacher Quality. That, along with low pay and soaring childcare costs, means many teachers end up having to choose between the children at school and their own kids at home. "We're really asking too much of teachers when it comes to trying to support their own families," said Heather Peske, president of the National Council on Teacher Quality.
