Hello readers and happy Tuesday. Kathryn Palmer here. Let's dive into today's top politics stories.

Strikes on Iran mount as war enters 11th day

The United States will deliver the "most intense day of strikes inside Iran" on Tuesday as the war sees Iran's firing capabilities continue to decline, Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth said in a morning briefing today. Yet as the administration continues its assault, questions over the war's future remain. Asked about where the war stands, Hegseth said the United States hasn't stated how long the war will take, but said it is not "endless" or "protracted." He said President Donald Trump, who on Monday predicted the Iran war will end "soon," is in charge of determining how much longer the war will last.

Trump says Cuba may be 'friendly takeover' or not

Trump said Cuba would have to make a deal in a "friendly takeover" or face an unfriendly takeover of its communist regime, answering questions at a news conference focused largely on the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran yesterday. Trump argued that Cuba had depended for decades on Venezuela's aid, which has run dry after the U.S. capture of President Nicolás Maduro to face narco-terrorism and trafficking charges. Delcy Rodriguez, who succeeded Maduro, has been cooperating with the United States and not sending aid to Cuba. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whose parents immigrated from Cuba, has been negotiating with Cuba's leadership to avoid a military confrontation.

Trump's SAVE Act threat not applicable to DHS

Trump's recent threat not to sign any legislation until Congress passes voting restrictions via the SAVE Act won't apply to ending the weeks-long shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, according to a White House spokesperson. Trump's nebulous decree immediately put him at odds with GOP leaders in Congress, who have been urging a swift end to the ongoing funding lapse at the Department of Homeland Security over Democrats' calls for immigration enforcement reform. As airport security lines have grown painfully long in some places, the intensifying impacts of the shutdown are starting to hit Americans more acutely.
