As Alabama jailers face brutality charges, sheriff seeks votes

Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith running for re-election in Walker County, Ala. Elected in 2018 as Walker County Sheriff, Smith is seeking a third term. SmithÕs time as sheriff has seen significant controversy, including the death of inmate Anthony "Tony" Mitchell in January 2023. MitchellÕs death while in custody at the Walker County Jail has led to federal lawsuits, petitions calling for SmithÕs resignation and other abuse and neglect under his administration.

The jail death of a man who suffered from mental illness drew criminal charges against Alabama guards. The sheriff says he's done nothing wrong.
