Russia will try to salvage US drone

Russia will attempt to retrieve and study the wreckage of the American drone that crashed into the Black Sea after being harassed by Russian fighter jets. However, Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of the Russian Security Council, told Rossiya-1 TV on Wednesday he was not certain the drone could be extricated. Two Russian jets intercepted the drone Tuesday, dumping fuel on it and flying in front of it, according to a statement from U.S. European Command. One of the fighters clipped the propeller of the drone, forcing it down.  See the latest updates on Russia and Ukraine.

Both US coasts prepare for more wintry conditions

The heavy snow, rain and gale-force winds from two storms that slammed the Northeast and California were easing Wednesday but still threatening havoc to both coasts with flooding, power outages and travel woes. Both regions were bracing for more wet and wintry weather on Wednesday. While parts of the East Coast dig out of up to 3 feet of snow, portions of northern and central California could see additional accumulations after being battered by the latest atmospheric river. Smelly blob of algae takes aim at Florida beaches

Beachgoers in Florida and the Caribbean could be greeted by blankets of smelly seaweed in the weeks ahead as a 5,000-mile swath of sargassum drifts westward and piles onto beaches. Sargassum, a naturally occurring type of macroalgae, has grown at an alarming rate this winter. In addition to the piles of sargassum, some species produce toxins that affect the food chain or deplete the oxygen in the water when they start to decay, causing fish kills and the die-off of other marine species.  Read more about the blob of algae.

TULUM, MEXICO - JUNE 15: Sargassum, a seaweed-like algae, covers a beach on June 15, 2019 in Tulum, Mexico. Mexico's Riviera Maya Caribbean tourist towns of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum are being inundated with tons of foul-smelling seaweed-like algae called sargassum that has turned the pristine blue waters brown and littered the white sands beaches. The government of Mexico is concerned that if the problem persists tourism could suffer. Scientists from South Florida University's College of Marine Science say that sargassum mats could be brought on by global climate change since increased nutrient flows and ocean water upwelling brings nutrients up from the bottom.
